明嘉靖朝奸相嚴世藩父子當國，權勢重大，得知同榜年友莫懷古珍藏玉杯，名曰一捧雪，向其索取，莫懷古懼之，乃以贗品贈之。裱背匠湯勤，為莫懷古門客，欲染指莫氏愛妾雪豔不能得，偶得知莫懷古假造玉杯之事，即告之嚴世藩，欲陷莫於死，乘機謀取雪豔。嚴命校尉至莫府搜杯，家僕莫成先藏杯逃匿，莫懷古攜眷潛逃，嚴遣人追緝，在冀州拿獲，就近交總兵戚繼光收管。戚繼光與莫懷古為至交，思欲設法保全，而嚴世藩之行文已到，著即隨地正法，斬刑前夕，忠僕莫成願代主受刑，莫懷古連夜出逃，戚繼光遂斬莫成以覆命。
